Understanding the major differences between Web 2 and Web 3

Introduction

We have all been seeing and hearing the terms Web 2 and Web 3 in connection to Blockchain Technology. Without doubts, most of us(people like me) didn't have much interest at first because we just reasoned that it's the normal ruse in the Technology world where new innovations are born every day.

Well, recently, I picked interest in the Blockchain Technology space and decided to explore the opportunities it presented. As a result, I registered for an Internship with the Zuri Team alongside a partnership with two Blockchain Tech giants namely: Blockgames and Nestcoin

Going forward, my first task was to understand what I will be getting my hands dirty on. So I went deep into research on it and will be intimating us on the knowledge gathered.

Thanks for the patience.

We will be looking at what Web 3 is and its difference from Web 2 by first understanding what Web 2 is.

What is Web 2?

"Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as a platform, and any attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform." - Tim O'Reilly

In simple terms, it is an improved version of Web 1 which is majorly a movement from building static pages to dynamic ones where users get to interact and create content on web platforms.

It features web functionalities like:

  • Ability for users to access the web using any internet-enabled device e.g phones, laptops, televisions, and so on.
  • Giving users the ability to sort, retrieve and classify information depending on their interests
  • Users are able to participate in creating and sharing responsive content thereby, paving way for virtual communities.

Before we move on to the difference between them, let's look briefly at what Web 3 is.

What is Web 3?

Web 3 can be said to be the futuristic offspring of the present web which is Web 2. It is the foundation of cryptocurrency. It is based on Blockchain technology and digital token which is used to encourage and build a decentralized network of systems.

Here are some features of Web 3:

  • Since the internet is decentralized, access to the resource is not restricted to users
  • Users will be involved in the creation and regulation of protocols.
  • The focus is on decentralization and semantic learning.

Differences between Web 2 and Web 3

  • In Web 2, the network owns the data while in Web 3, Entities are in charge of the data and how it is being shared.
  • Web 2 technology borders on AJAX and JavaScript while Web 3 involves Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and decentralized protocols
  • The focus in Web 2 is on community development while in Web 3 is on Individual users.
